Hi everyone,

I'm just about to get my first ducks(muscovies) and I'm just wanting some clear info on what I can feed them as a staple diet. I've been researching and found a lot of conflicting information.

I visited my produce store yesterday to see what feeds they had available. They've only got chicken feeds there, so I've bought a bag of layer pellets which are 16% protein. Will this be ok to feed them if I offer boiled egg and other sources of protein to boost it up closer to 18%? They will also be free ranging in my yard with access to lots of slugs and snails and plants. I might add that the ducks I will be getting are 6months old, not ducklings.

I also found my produce store only has medicated starter and grower feeds for chickens, which I understand are bad for ducks? What am I able to feed ducklings if I can't get unmedicated feeds? I have access to turkey starter/grower but these are also medicated. Can anyone recommend any brands of feed(in Australia) who produce unmedicated feeds?

hi there! As no one else has replied, thought i would just say that although I can't say what is available in Oz, I feed my ducks the same as my chickens, so that's layers pellets (available all day in hoppers), a bit of mixed corn in the afternoon, and quite frequently, any veg or fruit peelings cooked up, cooked pasta & rice (which they adore). They free range, so get slugs and snails etc, and of course lots of water, including a baby bath for a pond, with a little ramp to get in and out! spoilt or what!!.
hope that helps
all the best
Pat :D

Hi
I give my ducks wheat mixed with maintenance pellets in the winter months, in the spring / summer they have mainly breeder pellets mixed with 15% wheat. Hope this helps
