Drowning ducks

During the summer I lost 2 of my ducks because they, on separate days, climbed into their water bucket and drowned. The bucket was just a normal size one. Any idea why they drowned?

I have since bought a fancy drinker and don't let them have buckets. This might be a problem in winter when the drinker freezes up - it is easier to break ice in a bucket than a drinker. They have a fairly big pond so why choose to swim in a bucket? Daft bats!

I personally don;t let the ducks have water buckets just a pond, galvanised drinkers and 4" deep trays. Buckets can by slippy and once in can not get out, 4" deep gravel trays in the winter with warm water are good.
