Hi all,

One of my girls is not to well, it`s little brown hen ( strange name but she has always been known by it)
I have just finished worming them all with flubenvet and she comes when I give them the sweetcorn in the afternoon but does`nt eat any or seem interested.

Today I noticed that when she put her head down to peck at a single sweetcorn alot of water came out of her beak, she did not eat anything.

Tonight we had a look at her and the crop is soft and again water came out of her beak, is this sour crop?
I have given her one teaspoon of epson salts water and have read that I should feed her probiotic yoghurt and layers meal mixed and give plenty of fresh water, can I do anything else?

Please help if you can, she is a great little bird, about 18 months old.

kind regards Heather

My little hen does this if she has just had a long drink. The best time to check her crop is first thing in a morning before she has had chance to eat and drink if her crop is empty at this time chances are its not a crop problem. Her crop should empty overnight if the crop is still not empty bus soft and mushy and there is a bed smell from her beak sounds like sour crop.

Hi all,

well it is a lovely morning and the sun is shining, little brown hen seems a bit better, crop is empty and she came out and started eating grass and was very keen to get to the mealworms, a very rare treat for the hens they are usually reserved for the quail.

I did notice that her poo this morning still had undigested corn in and also in the shed there were a couple of patches of lime green sawdust under the perches, I wonder if this could also be hers but no proof.

I will keep a close eye on her but any advice would be welcome.

kind regards Heather

It may have been that she had a blockage that has now cleared itself. A little probiotic yogurt is a really good idea for chicken tummy-upsets, and make sure that she has access to plenty of grit to prevent any further problems!

Good luck!
