Found Skip dead a fortnight ago. She was the best dog I’ve ever owned. And also the last. That’s the thing. Our animals invariably pre decease us. If you can’t handle that then get an eternal jellyfish.

So sorry, HenGen. I know from hard experience how it hits you. Did she die of old age, or did you know she was ill?
Our little Poppy, now nine, has recently been diagnosed with mitral heart valve disease, which is a progressive condition that will get her in a year or so. Like you, at our age she will be our last dog, which makes it even worse to think of parting with her. Not only is she part of our family, but she makes us get out for a walk every morning, even when we don’t want to, which keeps us going.

So sorry to read that Hen-Gen. Having had it happen to me recently I know how upsetting it is.

Although our age is a factor when having a pet there are now unfortunatley lots of older dogs and cats that need homes because their owners cannot afford to keep them. I took on four older rescue cats and although it took a while for them to settle and the (now) 16 year old has had some health problems it was very rewarding. I relaise it's harder with dogs because their early training may be poor or totally absent.
