We are building another coop ourselves and wonder if the chickens need always perches inside their coop as our chickens do not use them in their old house and just rest on the straw? :-)05

Any suggestions would be appreciated, thank you. :)

You'd be better to put perches in even if this lot don't use them. The next lot you get might. It is natural for them to go up to roost at night though quite a few don't.

I agree, some do some don't, it is natural and more hygenic though for them to perch. I always offer perches however, with the large ones I have very low perches for them. My youngsters don't have perches until about 18 weeks old.

they are better roosting on perches where they can get air round their bottoms, the feathers can fall out if they sleep on damp and pooey bedding. mine roost on tyres which lift them off the ground enough too.

That's quite a good idea, is it a pumped up tyre or just a car tyre? :-)19

just old car tyres, i dust them weekly with diatom earth so no mites move in but the girls now prefer them to the perches! they can lay down on them.
