Another interesting new article on Poultrykeeper, about diseases common to Polands, and other crested breeds. Worth reading, even if you don't keep Polands.

The bumble foot treatment described has been very helpful for two of our Wyandottes Marigold. Problem we have here is sharp stones in the soil. What we are seeing is a very different condition to one we saw in England. There the foot filled with a white cheesy substance which sometimes stank of fungal infection. Then it would grow up into the foot and could be removed in one solid piece- I put that down to something in the soil. Now we are seeing a pale, almost clear fluid with no odour. It builds up and then leaks up in-between the claws as described in the article. It could quite easily burst the skin if the pressure isn't relieved. From now on I will be wearing gloves!

I would like to reassure prospective keepers that none of these health issues are common, except crest mites and these are easily dealt with. In fact, I have had polands for about 8 years, all sorts of strains, with none of the aforementioned problems, and have had just one bird with crest mites (I suspect she escaped my twice yearly lice/mite treatment regime) which was easily spotted and dealt with. Overall, I have found polands to be robust, tough little birds. Mine live out (with a coop obviously) all year round.
