HI,

Does anyone know what the difference it make to be DEFRA registered.

Also what does it involve if you do become DEFRA registered on a practical level?

Thanks so much,

Greenhen

Hi Greenhen----you are meant to register if you have over a certain no.of birds--I think its over 49-- I have seen allsorts of ads saying 'DEFRA registered'--in fact all you do is fill in a form on line filling in details such as numbers, types etc of birds , a few details of facilities etc and if you are a business or not.It is supposedly mainly I think meant to be for disease control and information --in reality I have no idea what they use the details for.My reason for registering was to pre-empt any problems from the people opposite who decided to put new bedrooms on their house right opposite my 'chicken area'!!!!!Ros

Hi, anyone with 50 or more birds- including chickens, geese, ducks, turkeys etc must register by law- under 50 and it's not compulsory- you can do it on line or by post- they need to know in case of out breaks of disease- and can inspect premises at short/no notice.

Thanks for the info.

The reason I asked was is we are presently got 34 chickens including our chicks and I wa.s wondering weather to make sure we don't go passed the magic 50 number.

I was thinking that if being registered meant lots of paper work which is ongoing and was lots of hassle I would ensure we stayed below 50 but if in reality it is only filling in a form and if there was a disease outbreak we may get a visit I may as well do so.

I would be interested in your views and anyone else who is reading this thread.

Thanks again,

Greenhen

Hi, it's very easy really- you can do it all on-line- and make changes when you want to- i.e. numbers going up and down- so, not lots of paperwork- not as much as if you have sheep/goats/cattle or pigs! - that is a nightmare
regards, David

HI David,

Thanks so much. I have got sheep only 9 bottle fed lambs so it sounds like registering the chickens isn't too much work so I may well register if the numbers over the summer rise as I would like to put some more eggs in the incubator.

There are a few breeds of hens I would like to add to my collection and hatching them is a good way of doing so - that's how I got my three cream leg bars last year.

Thanks again for your help,

Greenhen

There's also a thing called The National Poultry Register - which I think must be part of the DEFRA gubbins as every year they send me a form where I just have to update what I've got. But if you don't reply, they just assume you still have the same stuff (I think...)

I'm absolutely hopeless with paperwork. but don't find them too bad, there's not much to fill out & they don't hassle you.

The Q's on the National Poultry Register form are things like: How many coops do you have, are they enclosed, can wild birds access runs... Are your birds for eggs or meat.... Stuff like that.
