HI,
Has anyone any ideas how to treat a deformed back toe in Orpington Cock? I feel really bad as thought he just had a funny walk, then when he was having his dusting I noticed not only is his back toe nail missing, the toe is turned under and mishapen, hence funny walk. To add to his woes, his girls wont let him perch at night, so i dont think sitting helps. Am thinking of isolating him so he can get some perch time ( he does have access to low perch) and maybe bandaging toe back into correct shape. But any ideas would be appreciated, as i think it is bothering him.
thanks
wendy

Hi Wendy----if he is an adult I think it will be too late to correct , any tight tendons/bent legs etc need strapping usually in the first couple of days after haching . Unless hes injured/broken it recently?? How old is he, do you think its always been like that or if injured when?? Any signs of scaley leg? A picture would help if possible. Ros

Maybe post a photo? Might want to rule out scaly leg mite, they can cause deformity and discomfort, particulary in toes. It also might be due to an injury, specially if he has also lost a nail. Might be worth a trip to the vet to rule out infection also.

Hello, I am afraid, unless noticed and treated up to a few days old, his toe will never be "normal" most chickens with bent/curled toes can lead a normal life. They adapt easily and it doesn't seem to affect them too much.
Strapping will not do any good- as long as his feet are not covered in scaly leg and there is no cuts/infection there is very little you can do. He has a low perch so that will help.
regards, David :)

Thanks for your ideas and suggestions, No he hasnt got scaley leg, or bumblefoot, which i initially thought it may be. Looks like i may have to go to vets as it is causing him trouble walking and dont want it to get infected. Poor Orpie, still other than that hes eating and doing all the other cockeral like things just fine !!!
