I'm nearly at the end of day 21 (5.00) and not even a pip from six copper black marans eggs !
Plus I've 6 silver laced wyandottes and nothing from them either
I've a feeling could all gave died in shell but I could never see anything in them dark chocolate eggs !
Only two of the slw showed signs of growth ,

Are you counting correctly Ziggy? Day they go in is day zero. Is there a problem with your incubator temperature -have you checked it with another thermometer (clinical one is best from chemist, for humans)?
Was everything sterilised including the eggs? Very unlikely it is an egg problem.

Clean incy and placed in @ 5.00 on tues the 10 April , so day 21 ends today @ 5.00 ??
I did turn them odd times a day humidity is now around 65%
I've never had any not pip at least one by day 21 , although never done marans before !
The temp is a scientific digital I'm happy with , but humidity might have crept a day or to above 40% ??Before lockdown

Hi Ziggy. 'Scientific digital' means nothing -needs to be checked as it could have been incorrectly calibrated originally. They need to be turned 3 times a day 90 degrees. Were these ebay eggs and did they stand to settle point downfor 24 hours before going in? Were the eggs sanitised before they went in?

No they weren't eBay eggs , I fetched them locally from a farmer who'd hatched loads out , i did clean the incy but I never sanitise the eggs , I might get home tonight and there might be some action , but my temps are usually right

From what I've read temp must be 37.5 at centre of the eggs ,
Most folk place probes and thermometers in the incy tray , this surely can't be accurate either ? , so you would assume any eggs would lower in said reqd temp ? 1 degree low isn't going to ruin a hatch 1 high could ? As I'm also running a still air incy with eggs spread all over the tray , I now think it's been way off ,
Appreciate your input Chris

The fan would move the air around like an electric fan oven does. The difference in cooking times and settings with a non-fan assisted oven is considerable. The heat has to be higher and the cooking time longer. The temperature stabilises in time throughout the egg -takes about 12 hours to get the centre to temperature. You are right, 1 degree will slow the hatch down not ruin it. 1 degree high will ruin it.

I wouldn't waste your time running a still air machine Ziggy, depending on your insulation you might have 5 degrees or more difference around it. Just add a small computer fan if you can.

I agree with Chris, and my understanding of still air incubators is that they require a degree higher than "forced air" or those with fans. This would mean that maybe your hatch could just be delayed a day or two.

Thanks for all your help , I'm going to work on a fan after the times up , love this forum , I'm afraid I'm a bit of a novice still ,
But as a builder / carpenter & kitchen fitter , my expertise lys elsewhere ,

Wish you were closer, need a new staircase!:D

Yay 1 marans hatched in the night ,
I was carefully going to sort the eggs to throw as one I removed. Was infertile , when it's started cheeping at me
, overall not a good hatch , improvements needed , found a fan from the lid of a cool box , going to move eggs up in the incy and improve the water trays , any body thought of placing the temp proves into a sealed bag if water say to mimick an egg ?

You may get some more Ziggy. Just goes to show your unit is running quite cold.

You won't be able to read it in a bag Ziggy? Not necessary, just one at the top of the unit and one at the bottom and egg temp is inbetween as over a 24 hour period the heat will soak into the eggs until they are at a constant temperature throughout. If the fan and insulation are up to scratch the temperature reading on both will be the same.

That's good Info , I couldn't see a thing from candling those dark eggs , but the first one I threw was completely infertile as it was just mush but didn't smell rank ! So could it have been fertile ? And just didn't get the heat to develope ?
