Hi Paul. When any of ours have damaged combs we dab/wash with lukewarm water and then smear Savlon or teatrea cream. In the case of hens they are then separated to stop any of the other hens pecking it open again before it has scabbed. As I'm sure you know, inside every chicken is a cannibal waiting to get out. Once they have turned there is no cure. In the case of cockerels, they are isolated until completely healed -the scabs have dropped off. This is because the top hens will be allowed to pick at the scabs, which is good as it stops infection. But in some cases, particularly with our Wyandottes, they peck and taste blood and keep going. Arnold had half his rosecomb eaten by cannible hens -his first as well! They were immediately despatched and we gave him some placid ones when he was fully healed.
