Daffodil's digestion

The soil is generally alkaline because of the lime mortar in the building rubble all over the area. Previously we have had a lot more chickens on it, which makes it more acidic. We have also had our share of dandilions. But I think the answer is the level of rainfall. This is the wettest year we have had and even the veggy plot has no dandilions in it at all. Perhaps the amount of water has activated more lime mortar? That could explain why we have had more unstable digestions than previous years perhaps?

To update. Daffodil improved with the Beryl's but was still drinking huge amounts of water. This continued until she was only drinking water. She lost half her body weight in one week. Her feet got more swollen and she stopped talking two days ago apart from the occasional purr. She was struggling to move at all and refused all treats, even corn and cherries, except egg. This morning she was found sleeping in a lake of urine and when bathing her to wash it out she had a fit and minutes later died, seemingly very peacefully, in Rosie's arms. She seemed to enjoy her last few months and was always full of beans and very alert but her body just finally gave up. She will be missed, as all our losses are.

So sorry Chris, things just don't seem to be letting up for you at the moment. Let's hope the change in the weather has some good effect somewhere.

Chris I am so sorry, my heart goes out to you, I know how very fond you were of her :(

So sorry to hear about Daffodil Chris. She was obviously a special girl and was also a very lucky girl to have had you both to care for her. At least you didn't have to make that awful decision, she did it for you.

Thanks everyone. I've just put her in the freezer ready for burial soon -will have to be soon as it is unfortunately full of pet chickens. She looks so peaceful and happy, almost as if she is smiling. Yes Sue, I saw her this morning and didn't think I could leave her in that condition, but she perked up in the bath (she was bathed and blow dried yesterday as well) and then it was all over.

I'm sorry Chris, I believe she was my 'favorite' out of all your birds / antics. She fought hard against the odds and couldn't have had a happier life and have been more cared for anywhere - Lucky Girl. Will miss her, but glad she died with a 'smile'
x
