Cross Breeding

I have the following question. I have a Welsumer and an Australorp cockerel. I have Welsumer and Australorp hens. If I cross the Welsumer cockerel with the Australorp hens, and the Australorp cockerel with the Welsumer hens, which breed characteristics can I expect to see in the offspring of each?
 
It's hard to say for sure.Regardless of which parent is which, Type-wise the crosses maybe mid way between the two parent breeds, perhaps with some favouring the lighter build of the Welsummer and others the heavier build of the Australorp.
Colour-wise, assuming your Aussies are Black, the crosses should come self black, with varying amounts of Red/Gold leakage.
 
WHat about the eggs? What I am looking for is a lovely brown egg like the Welsumer's, and the laying ability of the Australorp.
 
Thanks Farmer John. If I can get a replacement for my lovely Australorp cockerel who sadly died this last winter, I will. Meantime the Welsumer cock is breedding like crazy. He's a beauty!
 
I have done a similar cross using an Australorp Rooster on Indian Game hens.
First generation you get all black.
Sibling mated you get a mix of all black and gold.

all the breeding is shown on my web site under breeding for dual purpose and I should imaging your Welsommer/Australorp breeding programme may follow the same lines.I'm breeding from 5th generation now.

I have a 3rd generation Copper Blue Marans bred back to Welsh Blacks that is about twice the size of an average Copper Marans which is penned in a group of Copper Blues and blacks with a view to breed a dark brown egg layer and a large table bird.
It will be interesting to see how you get on..It should take about 4 years before you get a nice dark egg.

Hi, if your looking at egg colour that is the cock which passes that on (read somewhere on the good old Internet) and it seems true. I hatched a chick, father French copper maran and mum black rock. Her eggs are definately darker than a black rocks but not quite as dark as the marans. Hope this helps a bit?
