Not a great photo (taken on the phone) Sorry. But anyway, incubated a batch of Light Sussex Eggs and decided I would try 5 eggs from the hens I have put with my new Rhode Island Cockerel. (2 Sussex and 2 Blackrock hens- The blackrocks are there just to make up the numbers and are very old),
I thought the Rhodie would be too young, 15-16 weeks of age when the eggs went in. Turns out he wasn't. No goldlines hatched out of the 5 eggs, but as you can see, one hatched which was most unexpected. :D

Hopefully someone can confirm for me. When you hatch Rhode Rocks or Black Rocks, the chicks are born completely black with the cockerels having a white tuft on their head?

This chick is a cross between a blackrock hen and a rhode island cockerel so unsure what it will look like feathered up. It is black, but has yellow wing tips and yellow from the chin all the way down underneath it and hence could almost pass for a penguin. It's legs are dark in color but halfway along the toes, turn pink.

Sounds really cute Gavin. I thought the Rhodie would be too young as well. Don't know about Blackrock cockerel chicks. But as Blackrocks are distributed before they are old enough to sex, perhaps they are autosexing?

Blackrocks are autosexing. I tried to find some info on the sex link colouring but all I could find was generic info about crossing Rhode island red or new hampshire with a barred hen resulting in black sex linked chicks. The males being born with white tufts.

I will post some decent pics once the chick has feathered up. Will be interesting to see if it follows blackrock colours or if the extra bit of rhode island through it will produce something funky.
