I have a mixed brood of 10 hens and am undecided wether to add a cockerel to the mix. Any input on the pros and cons of introducing a cockerel would be much appreciated. Also which breed of cockerel would be the best for temperament etc. Many thanks

Apart from the noise....I can't think of any reason why not, as long as you have a gentle one. There again I am biased mind you! I love to see a handsome young cockerel with his girls and enjoy watching the dynamic in a flock :D
One thing to watch for is the boy isn't too large with regard to treading, and there are enough hens, with the 10 that you have I don't think that will be a problem!

I can't think of any reason to introduce one ! Unless you want to breed of course. Marans have a bad reputation as do Black Hamburghs (not many about though). Most are OK but some just don't like you touching their hens.

You have obviously got the wrong cockerels Chuck! Think we may have to start a poll on this one? :D

I personally prefer my cockerels to my hens, yes,my hens do lay eggs which I enjoy, but all my cockerels are very handsome, very tame and I've got 5 cockerels of different breeds running with my hens.
The pro's of keeping a cockerel are 1)they do call the hens to come and eat any titbit that they've found, 2)mine also make a nest type structure for their hens to lay eggs in,3)stay with them when they are laying and chatter to the hens offering encouragement. 4)Far prettier than their wives and finally 5)have an abundance of character.
The only disadvantage is that they crow,so,if you are easily awakened you may not enjoy that part.I've stayed up all night when I can't sleep, and,my Thuringian cockerels did crow all night long in pitch black darkness.I've actually re-homed some and culled the rest.
The cockerels i've got now are pekins, serama, croad langshan, booted bantam,d'anver, yamato and a silky. They only start to crow once the dawn chorus has started and woken them up.

There you go! I expect there are plenty of friendly ones here with bags packed and ready! :D ;)

I agree with Lydia and Foxy- The cockerels are lovely to watch with their girls and if you choose the right one they can be actively friendly and a pleasure to have around :D
If you have good neighbours or live in a rural ideas I'd go for it! I recommend the heavier breeds like orpingtons- they can be more docile. My white orp is an absolute sweety!

Get a cockerel - I have about 40 of them, all very tame and like cuddles. They look after their girls
