Coccidia

Hi everyone

I was given some very ill chooks last July and being new to chicken keeping didn't notice the signs and put them in with my other healthy ones

One of the many things they passed on was coccidia, and I spend the whole summer nursing them all back to health... They are all now healthy and happy I am pleased to say, but to my horror this morning I found two droppings with blood in ..... In one of the droppings it was a pinky colour and had a jelly like consistency. In the other dropping it just looked like blood. Other than that, their droppings are fine, and they all run around outside looking very healthy and normal.

I phoned my avian vet and he said to put them back on Baycox which I have now done, but I'm at a complete loss as to why they have got this again - I have been cleaning them out every day, feeding ACV, vitamin supplements, free ranging them etc. I last treated them with baycox last november... IS this something I am going to have to treat them with forever?

I think your vet has been wise in starting ABs as a precaution, if they were mine Id think its probably the normal mucus/blood/tissue thing that all well chickens pass sometimes . As they are other wise well Id think you were right to ask the vet, hes right to take the precaution but if they are all well I guess its pretty unlikely to be of any significance. :D Ros

Thanks for your replies. That is reassuring Ros, I didn't know that chickens would normally pass mucus/blood. I have taken some of their poo and sent it off for testing so will see if it was Coccidia after all - fingers crossed it's not!

yes Gretyl--you often find bloody/jelly/pinky stuff , I DONT mean loads of frank/red/fresh blood ! I think its supposed to be something to do with occassionally shedding bits of gut lining, why they choose to do so I have no idea!! I also think its more common when coming up to laying ( I could be totally wrong here) , if thats all it is its NORMAL> Maybe someone on here :ugeek: can tell us exactly why they do this!???? Ros PS-wise precaution you took sending sample off-

When I checked them this morning all the droppings were good, no blood at all. However, my cockerell had little bubbles in teh corner of his eye... It doesn't smell at all and he is otherwise fine... Is this something to worry about??

bubbles in the corner of the eye usually means a respiratory infection,or be an eye infection.Try bathing it with Johnsons baby shampoo,if it's an eye infection, this should clear it up.His breath not smelling is a good sign.

By way of an update: I got the results back from the poo samples. They don't have coccidia :P . What a relief! The vet said that they had low levels of bacteria which can cause the lining of the gut to come away and cause bleeding. He said that the levels were too low to worry about, however, he said they may have come from dirty ground/pheasants etc.. When I mentioned Derek our resident pheasant he advised that we should probably get rid of him for the long term health of our chooks :(
I'm glad our chooks are ok but feel a bit sorry for poor old Derek. I'm going to catch him and release him up the road in a field with hundreds of other pheasants. Couldn't bear to give him the chop.
