'morning everyone on GCF
My name is Phyllis and I do love my Humum, so as I thought she was a little bit short on pressies this year - all lovely from the family of course, and some chicken related - of course, I laid her an enormous egg - 109 grams. One of my mates, we are called "the flock" has also done the same thing, but her egg was only a puny 97g.
I am supposed to be a LSussex hybrid.
She thinks I am actually a purebred and somehow got mixed with the hybrids, size, temperament, egg production and colouring. I know she loves me as she tells me so, but sadly I think she still loves those unspeakable bloody Pekins best.
She asked me to say all well with the littlies, warm water, foster mother (indeed) Marigold Mash night and morning; frankly I'd like to know when it
is our turn (the workers) for M.Mash?
Have a great new year everyone. love from Phyllis Light.

Hi Phyllis, and great to have you posting on the forum. I am a Buff Sussex myself, so I can relate to your efforts to please your human. However, I do feel there's no need to overdo it. I'm a big beautiful girl, and I like to devote as much food as possible to keeping it that way, without the stress of trying to produce eggs very often. When I do manage it, I make sure they never go much above 50 grams, just enough to let Her know I'm still in the game. What's the point? I go broody several times each year, I just long for some little chickabiddies, but I have a cruel and unfeeling human who promptly puts me in the sin bin when I try yet again. Not to speak of the enforced celibacy, if course.
Best to leave all that laying to those overactive young hybrid pullets, I think, and my CLB friend Nutmeg agrees with me. Mind you, we are nearly five years old, and it takes all our energy keeping the youngsters in line.
Anyway, Happy New Year, - let's hope we all get to see another one......
I do think you need to go on strike,if necessary, if no Marigold Mash is forthcoming. Sounds to me like rank favouritism down your way!

Hiya M.
I do love my Humum, she thanks us daily for our efforts, calls them "Bootiful eggies" (I ask you) and says can we please keep them coming. We could'nt stop them even if we wanted to.
Lovely to hear of another girl that can use the internet....
Be careful and don't over do it, do not strain yourself for her if she wont let you do certain things like go broody, I would think she needs a little talking to, only a small one though as you are obviously fond of her. Speak with you again soon, Phil, XX.

Well, Phyllis, things have got even worse down here in Hampshire, more like the Gulag than ever. The past week or so, I have been sleeping in one of the nestboxes, nice and private and cosy, even though I'm not broody - yet. However, you know how it is, one cannot go all night without a poo or two - or three - especially at my age, and after stuffing my beak before bedtime with as much of that warm mash as I can possibly fit in. For a while, the young girls seemed to be doing all their egg laying in the other box, so apart from a bit of daily grumbling from Her, (which of course I ignored) all was well. But then they started laying in My Box, after I had eventually got up in the morning but before She got down there, so their eggs got dirty. And the past couple of nights, when I've gone to bed, I've found both boxes blocked off with those ruddy flowerpots She keeps under the coop! The indignity of it -I've had to perch alongside the others instead of having my rightful private bedroom. The pots seem to disappear by the morning, but of course then it's too late to move across in the darkness and have a decent sleep. Humans! I ask you!
Yes, at least we do have an Internet connection down here, and when I get stuck the pullets are very kind and help sort me out. I think i must mention to Her that I need my nails cutting - they're getting a bit long to manage the keyboard.

Hello again, M.
When the feet fail, I personally do it with my beak, I gather a lot of us up in Surrey do, just being out of pullethood myself, I am selftaught, although you could get lessons at our hatchery. It seemed a good idea to have an alternative, keeps you busy, does'nt it?
Sorry about your problems with Her, can't your friends help you move the flowerpots? such a shame and such problems at your age, too. Perhaps you ought to lay off the mash so late at night, makes for a warm contented hen though.
We all line up on the perches, all 9 of us, but we never roost by ourselves, we like to make it a bit difficult for her by persistently perching on the hut roof, you should see it then she puts us in, the only time we get a scold as she stumbles and trips around with a ridiculous light on her head. Must go feel an egg coming on, lots of love, Phil.

Good idea, that, Phyllis, about the beak. I'm trying it out as I type this, can't think why I didn't think of it myself. It's faster, too, since I don't keep on falling over from standing on one leg. Thank you for that.
I still need a pedicure, however. Much as I dislke it. I should remind Her today.

Hi again, M.
I have just been reading about your foot problem - shame, sounds awful, but I know you are not neglected.
Sorry to hear your pedicure didn't go as expected, but must be a bit easier on the old tootsies now, as you are not walking on high feet anymore.
We don't have deep litter only in our roosty hut. We just have dirty feet, but they are all fine, at least my two are, a very nice pinky pair that do a lot of scratching in black earth.
Well, again, a very happy new year, meant to write earlier but what with with all this egg laying, eating greens, pecking up the corn and generally having a really good chickenly time, it quite slipped my mind today. Yours, Phyllis L.
