My little Serama chicks are a week old tomorrow, today, when I took them out of their brooder so I could clean it,5 of them had what looked like normal droppings stuck hard to their little bottoms.Looked like it could possibly block their vents.
I removed it,with a quick tug,(it made the chicks cry though  :o )and I hated hurting them.Should I remove dried pooh from them or just leave it?
There are loads of droppings in the brooder, tons of the stuff for such little chicks,so my common sense says it can't be causing a problem, and I'm being paranoid.

i had bit of a problem with that last year with my pekins, I used a bit of kitchen roll and warm water soften it to get it off as it was really stuck. but was only when they were fluffy and small after a couple of weeks they were ok. didn't seem to effect them pooping. think it may do if its left though. hopefully someone else will know more. its awfull when you make them sqeek :( but think it must be better to clean it

thanks Stepyone,I don't like leaving it,assume it would attract germs and bacteria, but their little high pitched squeek is really distressing.Next time I will try warm water with a soft tissue(paper towel is a bit rough)and they've only got little bottoms/vents ;) .

Yep sometimes the poop can block the vent if it builds up badly !! I had one little sablepoot chick last year who was unable to poop Until i managed to softened his vent with warm water it took over 20 minutes to soften it but eventually it will soften & fall off. Always best to keep an eye on them for the first few weeks

Thanks Wraith and Stepyone,I will keep an eye on them, with a bit of luck they will grow out of this soon.

i use warm water to soften it if i find a chick like it, then remove it.
I read somewhere that if its a problem to give them warm water to drink as its stops the messy vent, but then i read somewhere else that the chicks water must be cool   i must stop reading

LOL,you and me both Girlracer, today, they didn't dare to have poohy vents.....unless,where I removed it before it pulled so much down off there isn't any left for pooh to stick to :o .

Blocked rear ends are normally a sign that the brooder is too warm, if the blockage is left the chick will die.
Hold the offending item and pull off with one quick tug.

I er did, they squeeked like mad.Today I got them Johnsons Top and Tail wash for babies, baby lotion etc :D , got some sudocrem for sore little botties too :D .

Ive always placed them in a little shallow bowl of warm water for a couple minutes... even @ a couple days old Ive never had any problems doing so... and while they were in the bowl of water Id gently pick away what was stuck there until it was all gone... Ive even taken as long as 10-15 min or more doing so and no problems. Just dried them off and put them back under the lamps... and they always seemed quite thankful when done :D

That does sound calmer for them. They have now stopped the poohy vents, thought they'd give poohy feet/claws a go instead.I pop them in warm water,in my basin, all together. They happily paddle around, the lumps soften quickly and are easy to pull off.The relief for them was a picture.
I've now changed their bedding,so hoping they will stop this as well.
I've made them the Pooh clutch, and, will be named after the character's in Winnie The Pooh.Just have to hope one isn't as dense as Eyeore......... .
