Hi
I am an environmental education teacher. The centre works with 30 schools, but is based in the grounds of a high school.
I would like to get chickens for the centre, with the aim being for the pupils and teachers to set up a 'chicken club' to help look after them.
(I understand that looking after chickens is a big responsibility, so I am doing lots of research.)

I had assumed that we would need a weekend rota of people to let them in and out of the run & feed them.
The Omlet website states that as long as enough food is left they can be left in the run over the weekend. Is this correct?

Thank you!

Hi there,

Welcome to the forum. I have moved your post to the General Chickens forum from the FAQ area otherwise each post needs moderator approval... which is why it wouldn't have shown up at first when you posted.. hope this makes sense ;)

I set up our local school with some chickens. Yes, it's a responsibility but it's not too bad. The fox, you are right is the biggest area for concern - we made a fox proof run and house so the birds did not need to be locked up at night. They are let out of the run from time to time. You can get automatic chicken house door openers / closers that are pretty good too.

You may be interested in another school that wrote an article on Keeping Chickens in School for us too...

Yes, with big enough feeders / drinkers, assuming the water doesn't freeze, you should be fine for the weekend.... just don't believe Omlet runs are fox proof as they say because they are not

I hope this helps.

Tim
