Hi everyone, it's almost five months now since I've become a chicken owner and so far everything is going well. My 3 girls have settled in and are laying well. We went on holiday and the girls went off to Heidies Happy Hens for their hols ( a brilliant service) :D . they settled back in well but the laying was a bit hit and miss for the first week after their return home but all seems to be back to normal now - most days 3 eggs which is very good. The biggest bugbear is this damn weather rain, rain and more rain!!! :( and I seem to spend most of the day running down the garden to cover them up and keeping the run dry is impossible. I can't imagine what it's going to be like in the winter !!! Think we will need to get a more solid cover the one we have now is a bit like a tent that we have to clip on and peg down which is a bit of a pain when the heavens open half way through the process and I end up shouting and stamping my feet in frustration at the weather gods
But apart from the weather I'm really enjoying my chucks and my grandchildren ( aged 3yrs, 17 mths and 13 mths) love them - it's such a pleasure to see their little faces when they look in the nest box and see an egg :D - the joys of being a Granny x

My situation sounds very similar to yours Granny Magic. My grandchildren and great nephews just love coming to visit so they can look and help with my three chooks, especially my three year old great nephew, who is more than willing to get in there and help (?) :) My makeshift shelter over the run is a right Heath Robinson affair at the moment, put together with tarpaulin, lengths of wood, broom stales etc. But am in the process of making a more substantial cover, using homemade trellis panels and visqueen. Will probably just have this completed in time for the warm, dry spell which surely must come sooner or later, and before the girls grow webbed feet!

Our 3 year old grandson loves helping with the animals, he even cleaned out a guineapig cage for me yesterday, bless him :D
