Hi, just wondered if anyone could suggest what may be up with one of our black rocks, shes eating/drinking fine and laying well but ive just noticed that shes totally bald on one leg no feathers at the top the leg at all its only appeared in the last day or so, have treated her for mites/lice although couldnt see anything on her, there only her and one other very laid back black rock hen in their pen so i dont believe shes being pecked.
Any suggestions ????

Hi
I would put some liquid parafin on the leg incase the start of scaley mite. Is she starting a malt\
As long as she is healthy, eating and drinking would not be too worried at this present time

Agree could be mites.....she could also be pecking herself. What are you using for mites, have you checked her vent too for evidence? Also have a look carefully for any slightly "scabby" areas.

Hello Ivell,

Can we ask which products you used to treat the mites/lice? Red mites tend to appear at night time and hide within the crevices of the perches. You could therefore go into the hutch at night time with a torch and look around the perches and under the hen’s wings.

It is always important to treat both the house and the birds. Why not take a look at our website which has a good overview of how to prevent and treat red mites/lice http://www.chickenvet.co.uk/general-health-and-common-diseases/red-mite-infection/index.aspx .

There is a possibility that your hen is moulting however we agree with the others that it is much more likely that mites are the cause.

Best Wishes,
Chicken Vet
