chicken fun!!

Hi Cuiwar, I left the gals a 'kong' of mixed corn to try out before I went to work, to see what they thought of it, when I got back I finally found it buried, and nearly empty, in the litter, they had been busy :) :)

Haha, I guess that was always likely to happen! Sounds like you've got some hackers! Where there's a will there's a way! My girls haven't figured out that the top opens yet but guess it could be glued down??

I put some maggots in my 'kongs' this weekend and they were going crazy for them. I put a pot in either end of the pen and big boss was running from one to the other as she didn't want to miss out on what was in either...the other two would scarper when she came over but I'm now worried the kongs might be a victim of their success as I don't want her having a go at the other two over them!

PS I find that putting chopped greens in means the small stuff doesn't fall out as quickly and that slows them down!

Can't believe I'm putting so much thought into chicken play things! :ugeek:

The log is a great idea. Once they are finished finding bugs in it they will use it to perch on. An old basket, a bucket, saw horse sat in the middle of the pen so they can fly up on to it but not over the fence. Just try different things. A child's wagon, a chair or stool, just about anything they can look under or get onto. I have clipped a hedge and left the clipping in a pile to find a day or two later they had scattered them. A flake of hay, straw or grass trimmings. Anything to scratch in and find tidbits of food. A box of sand for them to take a sand/dust bath in. Shallow pan of water with grain in it that they can peck in and get the grain (it is safe from small birds in half inch to 1-1/2 inch of water {1-3cm}) Leaves or grass clippings floating on the water, or flower peddles. Chickens love table scraps, especially veges and breads. They will eat meat, gravy, cooked eggs, fruit, nuts, left over pudding, pie crust, cereals, just about anything we eat. If you have a bush or tree that drops a lot of seeds collect them and give to them like you would leaves, in a pile. Use your imagination. They are very curious critters and will investigate just about everything. Mine free range and sometimes I find them on my patio sitting on the table and chairs. If I have lest something on the table or in the chairs the chickens are going through it. They got into the feathers from plucking chickens for butchering. They were really enjoying that. They love cat and dog food if they can get it. Hope this helps you find things for your birds to relieve their boredom.
