Hi guys, i only have 3 teenage chooks now, and I am planning to buy 2 hens just for eggs...
- which particular breed should i have (big eggs)
- what are the points to look when buying a chicken?
- the market prices of the breeds (just estimated price, just want to make sure i make
a fair deal)

sorry for the questions, still new in the chicken world... i tried to look for the prices, they vary enormously...

thanks in advance for your answers...

I would suggest Warrens for a 365 a year egg supply and georgeous friendly girls, and Light Sussex for ultimately huge eggs - 100 grams one of mine produced, and georgeous friendly girls who are very little trouble, easy to tame and lovely to have around; I may have been exceptionally lucky with my hens, but the above is my introduction to hen keeping. I paid £8 each for my Warrens, and the Light Sussex I hatched myself. I think prices of POL hens is probably higher now - I had my Warrens nearly 2 years ago, and the hatching eggs from ebay. I hope this helps.
I have heard that Lohmanns are the ultimate egg laying machines, but my girls laid for their first 15 months without a pause, and are still going strong and producing monumental eggs!
Give your girls names and use them, they do respond very well and become super tame. Mine are part
time free range, and love it. Enjoy your girls. Regards, Valerie Butterley.

Warrens and Lohmans are great as laying machines - sadly they are programmed to last about two years they lay too many eggs at the expense of their lives!! such is the life of Hybrids .. why not go for a favorelle - lays about 50 eggs a year less than a hybrid, - realy cute to look at - lovely white beard etc - lots of eggs (big ones as well) and males can be killed at about 12 weeks - what more could you ask for?? - but the advantage is they live fir a long time - my Old Magic Mullah died aged 10 - I've got a LF Fav still laying and she is 9 years old - you would have had nearly 3 generations of hybrids in that time -

thanks for the answers guys, but how about the points to look into when buying a chicken?

thanks in advance...

The Warren types will only lay for two years under commercial conditions (in fact are only commercially viable for less than that) but will live and lay for more years than that under normal conditions so I wouldn't write them off. There are a few good alternatives out there amongst the pure breeds but you have to select with care.
