hi.
i was wondering if anyone could help.
i incubated 2 chicks. they both are fine however one isnt as big as the other and around the evening times shell become hunched and look miserable and cold. i am bringing her in the night into a warm small hutch with the other one however i notice that in the morning there is blood in the poo but only some.
i then was reading a magazine and said to watch out for coccidiosis which is a parasitic infection. and she had the symptons it occurs in wet but hot weather which is what we have sort of been getting.
i was wondering if anyone could help please and if so is it coccidiosis and is there a treatment. or is it better to put her out of her misery :(

How old are your chicks? Are they on the Anti-Cox premedicated crumb. If its caught early enough and treated efficiently it is very treatable .The chicks need treartment (Coccoid can be bought but more efficient treatments available from vet) Housing/feeding area/water bowls etc all need disinfecting with a brand that will treat the oocyst stage. Main thing is to treat straightaway. Ros
 
I agree sounds like cocciodosis, and will need swift treatment with medication.
You can get baycox from the vet, very effective and will treat very poorly chicks. Coxoid is also effective and available from most good agri stores like Countrywide for example.
If treating with coxoid use un-medicated chick crumb as this will interfere with the mode of action.
As Pods says keep scrupulously clean, remove any contaminated droppings immediately.
You can add oregano to their drinking water, this will help too or you can buy as a supplement...oregostim is a good one.

should i seperate her on her own as i can only see one having it the other one is looking fine or shall i put them together
i also have two broody hens in the same chicken house one with a chick the other with fertile eggs would these be ok.
i am now going to pick poo up every day now which i used to and then i went to college in wibchester and leaving at 6:30 and getting back at 7ish so i missed quite a few days and never got back however it is deffo once a week but shall now be once a day again
i am going to my countrystores today to see what i can find

Force fed (syringe without needle!) natural yoghurt with prodiotic which worked for us twice. Vet said she was a gonner as poos was all blood and guts. Obviously bedding must be kept clean as other chicks will peck at infected poos. We separated ours for just three days. Chicks mend fast.
 
Yes, natural yoghurt with probiotic (important bit). I got the idea when I read that some breeders let their new chicks peck at the stuff. It is supposed to kick start their gut so that they digest sooner and then grow faster. Perhaps the enzymes in the yoghurt attack the coccidiosis bug -don't know, but it certainly worked fast. Lucy is now 4 years old and has had lots of other problems. All digestive ones are treated with probiotic natural yoghurt and it has always pulled her, and most of the others we've used it on, around. They like it as a treat dipped in small pieces of bread as well. Bit messy though.

we are now halfway through the treatment.
i found coxoid so using that.
i am treating all of the birds together. is it a good sign that when cleaning out them there is quite a bit of pooh with blood in?

No, I wouldn't say that is a good sign Hannah, your chicks are probably in the acute stage now, and the next couple of days will detirmine whether they survive.
Survival depends on strain of coccidia, length of infection, enviroment and treatment.
Blood in the droppings indicates that the coccidia have infiltrated the intestine or ceca depending on the strain.
It is important that the bedding is kept bone dry, and change water daily, if they worsen use a syringe or dropper to get fluids into them. Make sure that on treatment you are using an unmedicated chick crumb if you are using coxoid and do not give any other supplements apart from oregano...no vitamins etc..

If you have an oppportunity to get to a vets or maybe a local breeder may have some Baycox you could use.

Coccidosis can be beaten, I have seen and heard of very poorly chicks making a complete turnaround in a matter of a day or two.

i kinda thought that it could be a good sign meaning the coxoid is getting it out of their system.
bought some oregano ths afternoon so shall put it in first thing tomorrrow morning.
however one little chick does seem a lot happier as before it was about 6ish in the evening and she would hunch up and stand there tonight it was 8ish and she was eating the grass and wandering around and she was the last one to go on the perch. and she was the worse one.
am hapy about her improvement (would you say so?)
 
She sounds a bit better, but keep going untill it clears up and keep giving us regular updates. I dont know how much you have actually red about coccidiosis, more information can be found halfway down the page of the link below.

also the little chick did have a bad start to life.
as i always candle my eggs after the incubation its normall 2-3 days after they were suppose to hatch. i candled her and both me and parents both said she was dead and there was no movement. we then hatched her open and she was still alive. so popped her back in the incubator on a higher temperature. it was touch and go all night and in the morning she was walking around the incubator :) still weak and wobbly. the link you sent me said lack of immune system. could this be a link.
this morning she even bullied (tiny bitt) to get to the food. i still think there is hope. i shall work out how to get a picture up of her before the treatment and now.
