Hi,
One of my pekins has some sort of infection that has made her eye go bubbly. I've been treating all of them with Tylan as per the vet's instructions.

Yesterday another one started with a closed eye, which I bathed, thinking the Tylan will do it's stuff.

This morning, when I wne out to bathe her eye it was a bit different from the others I've had.
When I opened it up, it was full of a white cheesy substance. I got most of it out, but it goes right down under her eyelids. I didn't want to cause too much distress, so I'll leave the rest till later on.

Is this just one of those things that will clear up with the Tylan, or is it something more sinister?
Fingers crossed.

Hello, i would just wash it out with plain warm water and leave it- there might be a bit of grit, dust etc in there causing irritation-
regards, David :)

If the eye has white thick matter in there you will need to give her eye drops as the infection will worsen. Optrex infected eye is very good 1 drop for 7 days will clear it up, can get from pharmacy just dont tell them it is for chickens.

Thanks, Sue,
The day after I last posted here I took a HUGE solid piece of "cheese" out of her eye. It wasn't visible in the eye - all of it was underneather the lower lid.
She wasn't too happy with me, I can tell you.
For the last two days her eyes have been completely open and the swelling has gone down, though she's feeling a little timid and doesn't free-range with the others when I open the pen.
She's gone completely pale in her face again, so I suppose she's been knocked off laying for a while?
At least she starting to get better.

The cheesey substance could have been from infection that is being cleared from the sinus cavity. Birds have an opening to the sinuses at the front corner of the eye, that is why when a resp. infection starts the first symptom is usually bubbles in the corner of the eye.

----or possibly could come from discharging cyst under eyelid. Ros
