I wondered how much you would have been affected by that. It's one of the problems of overhead cables but at least you didn't have water flowing out of your (mains) gas stove. I have oil central heating because there is no gas, or mains drainage for that matter, but I also have a woodburner, torches, anoil lamp and lots of candles although their not a good idea with seven cats! I also have a single gas burner and lots of cartridges and I've always been a fan of the pressure cooker so apart from the freezer, power cuts aren't too much of a worry. I had to thump the lid of the wheelie bin really hard to break the ice seal but it hasn't been really cold, only -6 at night and I've had no snow. ???
 
Glad to hear that you're OK HenGen. You were the first person I thought of when I heard the news.

I had to use a tyre lever to open the door to the run on Monday. The drinkers have been frozen every morning for the last week & when left in our outbuilding they're not thawing. So I 'm bringing one into the house each morning & leaving it in the bath to defrost ready to wash & refill the next morning. It definitely helps to have a spare in this weather!

Naturally Nibbles has decided that this is the ideal time to start moulting ?‍?
 
Many still struggling as best they can. Many folk have gas or peat fires as well because history has taught that reliance on a single fuel source is risky here. Village halls have opened across the isles to provide warmth and hot drinks and mobile phone charging points. Old folk are monitored by relatives, friends or neighbours.
We only had 24 hours of outage so freezers were just about saved as they are all bulging with mutton after last months annual kill. My slaughter lamb is still roaming the field with his sisters but I had much else to lose.
The salutary lesson though is the reminder how fragile our communities are in the face of bad weather. In windy weather both our ferry and the emergency helicopter are non functioning. As someone said to me ‘Fetlar is no place to have a heart attack or a stroke’.
 
Probably right Icemaiden. I was looking at those battery packs for household appliances. £300 upwards but then a freezer full of food is probably worth more than that. Also I have my freezers in the house to provide some background warmth but might be better in an outbuilding where cold weather would prolong their coldness in the event of a power outage.
 
We took to emptying the drinkers at night and putting them in the bath, so they weren't frozen or icy in the morning. One advantage of a bungalow didn't have to run upstairs with them. On the Saturday the temp was -8 in the morning and +6 in the afternoon just went from one extreme to the other.

Glad you are ok Hen-Gen and the food survived in the freezer
 
Not sure if this comes under cheery pics, or should have a health warning?

It was fancy dress day at work, so I went as Captain Hook, the tights took a bit of getting on, and I haven't smudged the moustache yet. Luckily I haven't had to drive a bus with a hook.

There are several elves, a Widow Twankey, a turkey, Snow White, Mad Hatter all let loose on the unsuspecting public

Thunderbird puppet next year, or the Child catcher from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

The hair was a wig I hasten to add, far to tidy for mine. I had to hide the plastic cutlass in the office, as lakeside security spotted me and said it could lead to panic amongst shoppers. It was very quiet yesterday, but lots of children wanted their photos taken with me.
