we were at our local country store today picking up some food and as we were leaving, noticed a new feed store across the road selling 25kg bags of chicken food for £5.50 per bag.
We went in for a look see, being the poor people we are lol and and found out it was a layers pellet by dobbs and boyle
anyone heard of this?? and is it any good ??

I haven't heard of them but there are a lot of mills arounf the country selling chicken feeds locally.

That's an incredibly good price. I've just bought a tonne of layers pellets at an equivalent of £5.50 / 20Kg and Mixed corn at £6.40 / 20Kg. This has grit mixed in with it which is why it's a little cheaper too since the grit is cheap.

Normal pet shop prices around here (for Marriages Layers feed for example) are £8.80 / 20Kg

thx tim i might just give it a try, and if i see any deterioration in my chooks, never try it again
we currently buy from mole valley or country stores so we do pay a lot more than that normally

If it's a local store to you girlracer, would they give you a sample to try?Might be worth asking, and, then you'll be able to see and smell a smaller amount before offering it to your chooks, also,if your chooks like it,it is then worth buying a sack.I'd expect a company to offer you a sample,if there is a phone number on the sack, ring them direct and ask. It's er,the sort of thing I do......

All bags of food should come with an analysis of what they contain.

If you compare one with another you should be able to see if they are cutting corners, or are just selling with reduced margins. If they are new, they might be doing it as a lost leader to get you in through the door.

If you have the storage space (and the money) buying in bulk should get you a better price. Most feeds will keep fresh quite some time provided they are kept dry.
