Can you use Bark Chippings as a run base

As above really can you use Bark Chippings as a base?
The run is currently got just a plain dirt base but wondering wether to put something down in addition.

Hi i use bark chippings on all my runs the hens love picking it over to find bugs

Yesterday in my run I put down weed control fabric and then covered this in bark chippings, boy it nearly done me in but so glad it looks good and my chickens should now stay mud free this winter. I have also roofed half the run so they have the option to stay out of the rain. It took the girls quite a while before they would come out the coop, bless those bark chippings are really scary things!!!!
