Hi there.

I live on a residential farm where we are fortunate to have a large, old and stocked farm pond of ducks both domestic and wild. I bought a call duck and her drake 2 years ago and she mated with a another half breed domestic/wild duck this spring and hatched 5 cross bred ducklings this summer who are now on the pond.

In the last couple of weeks she has been incessant in her calling and sometimes through the night, setting other domestic ducks off and waking or keeping neighbours awake.

What can I do? I've spoken to a fellow keeper on our lane who has advised me to pen her with her drake to calm her calling down. I have been asked to re-home her by a neighbour but am reluctant to do so until I have explored other options.

Hi :) welcome to the forum. Sadly there isn't really much you can do as this is what they have been bred to do. I'm assuming that she still has her drake. Call ducks love nothing but to have a good yell for apparently no reason at all, you can usually distinguish the reason behind duck vocalisations by the tone and length of the quacks but call ducks break all the rules, they were bred to quack. Loudly, especially at this time of year! They even call at night. So sorry :( she would calm down in a few months but it will be the same again year after year. Personally I would rehome the neighbour rather than the duck. Shutting her up at night with her drake certainly may help if she isn't with him anyway. Putting her with a random drake would make matters worse though!

Thank you Dorset Duck Owner!

You are the third person to tell me to re home my neighbour!

I'm sticking by the duck ;)
