Hi Everyone,
Just wondered what everyone's thought are on this one - I have 4 chooks (started with 7
) One is a Campine which is a rare breed & smaller than the others (Speckled Maran, Sussex & a Don't Know poss Maran!) they all came from a friend of a friend who hatched them. She got the fertilised eggs from a commercial 'Farm' type place. Had she had proper advice I don't think she should have been sold the Campine egg (as it is smaller, requires different things etc etc) as a garden chook , she didn't know what she'd got & I just chose the colours I liked!
Anyway, they are now about 18mths old & although Brigitte (the Campine) is the bottom of the pile she's managed well & there hasn't been much problem. There was a bit of pecking going on (one day her comb looked like a beak had just caught the tip) but I haven't been worried until now. Shirley, the large black 'don't know' breed has started really having a go, & today started chasing her, then trying to peck for no reason. lots of squaking going on etc, but next minute they're all calm again even sitting on the perch together.
Brigitte was the first to go in to a moult, lost most of her feathers back in about Oct but not laying again yet. Do you think that they'll settle down again? That the no eggs are partly due to stress? & if I introduce some more chooks in the Spring as I want to, will this upset things too much or sort out another pecking order? can't have cockerel due to neighbours.
Your thought welcome.
