broken & bleeding sablepoot foot feather

Hi,

Our baby sablepoot, 18 weeks, has a broken and bloody foot feather. It was snapped at an angle and with slight pressure I have removed it- I didn' yank it. There is some blood, which I have cleaned up, and it looks as though it is now congealing. I have applied pressure to the foot, and covered it with Sudocreme, which was the only thing to hand. She seems fine in herself, and is walking around ok.

Is there any more I can or could be doing for her. AM i right to have pulled the broken feather off?

Any help, advise etc, most welcome

Im sure removing the broken feather was right thing to do or she may have caught it and caused more damage . If the bleeding has stopped and shes fine I am sure all will be fine.Nothing else to do. Ros

I used to keep lemon sablepoots & found this can happen alot with there foot feathers. Especially when they get older & start sparing/playing about. All i used to do to is stop the bleeding is i used to dust on some wound powder to help heal & stop other birds from pecking the red bloody area. As sometimes birds get attracted to red colour of blood. You can also use the purple Gentian Violet Spray to stop other birds from pecking the wound. Normally they heal up just fine.

I think it was a shock to see so much blood from one single feather.....I used half a pack of cotton wool.
All seems fine now, thankyou.

John- Wound powder? Have you a particular one in mind.
(I also believe I have watched a youtube video of your Sablepoots- gorgeous grown up girls. Why do you not have them now?)

I am also very sorry about your hen, so sad.

Wound powder is white,in a white container with blue wording.It's full name is Veterinary Wound Powder and you find it in equestrian section of pet shop/farmers store.It is fine to use on dogs,cats,cattle and chooks,it does stem bleeding quickly,not intended for an arterial bleed tho .
Something else that you can use,I've forgotten the name tho is the powder you can buy to stop dog nails bleeding if you've cut the quick in their nail.

Have just found some online, many thanks for that. The seller also sells "iodine spray", it is worth me getting some of that too?

I do find iodine usefull,I've a few odds and sodds,depends what they've done as to what I use.I found it easier to know what to use when I was younger,I think I just panic now,so usually ring Sue,Kym or Ann to check what I should do :? .
