A popular cross is a white Sikie cock to light sussex hens and then you are able to autosex the chicks. Does anyone know if this is the same using a blue silkie cock to light sussex hens. Can they be autosexed.
Hello, i think you will find it is a gold silkie cock x light sussex hens that is sex linked-the pullets being golden ( popularly known as gold tops) White is a hidden colour and you can't tell what it masks - the sex link is gold cock x silver hen. Blue is another matter!
blue doesn't breed true so you will not get any sex-linked from a blue mating. Hope this helps,

Thanks for this. I have never bred this cross but I was led to believe (wrongly) that it was a white silkie cock. Is there any one out there in the Lancashire/Manchester area who breeds this cross. If so do you have any hatching eggs/day olds or young pullets available. I will either pay cash or swap for Marans, leg horns or cream legbars that have just started laying.
As long as the white silkie is genetically gold- then they will be sex linked- most white silkies are- but not all- gold silkies are obvious- white can be a very difficult colour to work with- you need to know how it's bred- and white is not normally dominant- depends on which genes they carry-except white leghorns which are- it's a little complicated but easy enough once you get the hang of it!

White genetically was a confusing colour(or lack of colour)to work with in dog breeding.Eg., a dog can look pure white, but, get it wet, and,if the skin has any area,no matter how small that is not white. The dog is that other colour, often black with whippets,or blue.Is this similar to silkies David?
This is getting very complicated. If I use a Gold Silkie Cockrel then I am OK but it may be hit and miss with a White Silkie Cockrel. Have I got this right.
