Hi guys,

I have 3 Astralorps now, i know they are pretty good layers though i am just wondering which chicken is for this and that... let me explain this further...

- which chicken is the best for egg laying...
- which chicken is the best for meat...
- which chicken is the best as pet... for showing...

if i missed a question feel free to add... ehehe

Best egg layers are from amongst the hybrids but some of the 'fancy' ones like the Light Sussex hybrids lag behind a bit and the Blues. The only pure breed that can compete is Utility White Leghorns.

There are specialist meat breeds. Some of the traditional dual purpose chickens like the Orpington and the Light Sussex don't produce the kind of carcass we've become used to but they taste good.

Don't know anything about show stock

I have, as layers, Warrens - Hybrid, who give wonderful service as egg layers, are neat, pretty, and amusing, and with lovely temperaments and very, very, friendly, and Light Sussex ditto all of the above. I
am also accumulating an army of Pekins, who are funny, friendly, tenacious little guards and do not trash the garden!! Have not shown anything yet, but the Pekins might tempt me one day.
