I had two good poultry books for Christmas, and wondered if anyone else had something good to recommend and share?

the first one is Back Garden chickens and other poultry by John and Cara Harrison, see
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Backgarden-Chickens-Other-Poultry-Harrison/dp/0716022680/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1324927348&sr=8-1

This would be a good one for people just starting out with poultry, chickens, ducks, geese or quail, in a garden setting. Practical sensible advice on all the main aspects of poultry keeping, written in clear English, and with some nice colour pics. I thought the authors' estimates of the cost per chicken per year was a wild underestimate, but otherwise very useful little book.

The other one is Chicken Coops for the Soul, a Henkeeper's Story by Julia Hollander.

This is an account of the author's first 5 years keeping chickens, starting when she took her 5-year-old daughter to buy a pet rabbit and came home with two chickens as well, (as one does....) A lot of the mistakes she made, and the pleasure she found in her chickens, rang a lot of bells with me. Very enjoyable, and she shares a lot of her hard-won wisdom along the way.

Anyone else had a good book for Christmas? (not necessarily about poultry.)

I have excellent library of books, written by experienced poultry keepers, breeders and vets.

I do prefer to buy books from authors that I know have a wealth of experience, and medical knowledge with poultry.

No books for Christmas Marigold, but I did get a Mr. Noisy 'T' shirt -why?!?

I buy books (with lots of pictures of chickens) from discount book stores and old chicken keeping books from market stalls or charity shops. Two great books, which have a lot of shared material, came from 'The Works'. The better of the two was £4 (rrp £15) called Keeping Chickens by Jeremy Hobson and Celia Lewis. Very sensible and comprehensive book and perfect for a beginner -wish I had it when we started. Only fault it doesn't list Cream Legbars in the breeds, but it does list TNN's, has a great section on coops and mentions crowing competitions-loads of good pictures.

The most informative book came from a Village Show. 1918 'Poultry for the many' -£8 after a short haggle.

Surprise book was 1950 Bantam breeds -£6 in Hay on Wye bookshop, 'nature' section. Really good write-up on English Leghorns.
