Bonfire Night

Hi, does anyone know if chickens are particularly bothered by fireworks or if there is anything I need to do in preperation??

Ours are. We can't do much about the noise but covering or closing the vents stops the bright lights; its usually very cold on the nights anyway. We will have soft shelled eggs on the coop floors in the morning though -from some of the few that are still laying. Unfortunately our cellar isn't big enough to take them all.

Thanks for the reply, we only got our three at the weekend so they are still settling in but all seem quite happy, only one is laying so far (although she hasn't for the past two days so maybe she's stopped for the winter?) I'm not sure how fireworky it'll get by us as it's our first year but I'll shut them in tight that night and hope for the best - I'm not sure we'd be able to bring them inside either.

I expect it largely depends on how near/loud/lengthy the bangs are. Last year there was quite a lot of noise one night and I went down to see what the girls were doing and they were all tucked up sleeping peacefully.
If you do put something over the coop to muffle the noise, remember to remove it later on before you go to bed, in case they don't wake up in the morning!

Yeh sure!! I might put a piece of carpet over or something like that - not overnight of course! And Apple Cider Vinegar in the week running up too...

I am also concerned for our Chucks on Bonfire night due to it being our first year in our house, also the first bonfire night we have owned Chucks. I was thinking about bringing them in doors for the night( in a dog cage) but not too sure if this will be more un-settling for them.

the people over back had fireworks friday. i didnt know abou it till after they stared to off so not much i could do. i though i was gonna wake to couple dead ducks but they were not tat bothered in the morn and even when a fue went off in the day (what was the point) they hardly bothered by them.

Cover up as best you can. I've never had any injuries caused by frights or panicking but it does unsettle them.

I would not move chicken from their normal house unless it was absolutely necessary.

most birds wont mind firework night but its not only one night is it , around here they are starting to go of like crazy { just waiting on the dog to start freaking } now but once the birds are at roost you'll find that most will sleep though it all even though i'm a bit worried about my baby boys as this is thier first year . i have been told for the past 3 or 4 yrs not to worry about them . i have two houses probably about 40 metres away from the run that always let of biggggggggggggggggggggggg fireworks and the girls seem to cope with that but either way it doesnt stop you worrying . forgot to add this is the time of year i pray for lots of rain wind and storms :lol: its about the only thing that stops fireworks going of :lol:

Some are bothered, some aren't, depends on the breed, our big orps just zone-out and sleep through the whole thing, while my friend who keeps other lighter more skitish breeds say hers are terrified and go right off laying eggs!
If you can bring them into cages indoors then that would work, if not, just try and insulate the hen houses with carpet etc. we have a good friendly community around us thankfully, and most folks will come round and tell us when they are having fireworks, so it gives us chance to prepare, but like i said, our birds just sleep through with no problems. It's not the birds i worry about, it's my cats! :roll:

Would maybe bringing them, into a more secure building help, such as a yard building or a small out house?
