I am assuming that this is far from decent and I may need a vet - any quick fixes?

I'm going to have a look at the chicks to examine their vents to discover which one it is, if possible.

Background: ex-freerange, spent a week with me eggs all days bar one, yesterday had a load of clear odourless slime in place of one egg. None of the chucks look out of sorts and are acting normally apart from this egg business.

I'm no expert but I've had some eggs with blood on, but its nothing to worry about and they continue on happy enough. It usually happens with my younger chickens when they first start laying. Make sure she's getting enough grit and calcium. Check their bottoms, one may have blood around the vent.

Hope it all sorts itself out

yep ive had plenty of eggs with blood stains on them. i wouldnt worry unless there is a large amount of blood or the hen is still loosing blood from her back end or if you keep getting blood stained eggs. you will probably find it is a large egg aswell. the slime may be an egg that was laid without a shell which is common and the hens have eated the yolk out of it.
my hens from the same place as yours are also laying eggs with thin shells and what i call water bombs with no shell at all. x

Thank you - can't find a thing wrong with any of them and they're romping around the garden without a care in the world! Don't they know I've spent the morning worrying about them?

As an aside, sorry to the Mods as I've noticed I should have popped this thread in another section.

thats good news. i would just keep an eye out for a few days. all sounds pretty normal though x

...and there we go.

Today - four eggs, no problems, all pecking away as if nothing had ever happened.

Insensitive bloomin' birds - don't they realise I spent a Sunday frantically worrying about them?!

I know they can be very cruel!

I'm always worrying about my hens (no doubt why there are so many posts by me about various illnesses!) and then as soon as they get better, they like 'What, what are you looking at? Where's my corn?' - I wouldn't have it anyway though!
