Blackbird duets

Does anyone have any idea what these blackbirds are doing?
It sounds like a musical contest with each listening to the other's phrases and trying to outdo it - a bit like a rap jam contest!

I thought it might be something like that. What seems intriguing is that they have already raised at least one nest full this year and yet, round here, the evening vocal hi jinks only started in earnest a couple of weeks ago. Maybe the girls are doubly hard to impress the second time around! I had the bizarre notion that it was some sort of local lingo school for the offspring - or at least 'OK youngsters, think your good but match this!'
