one of my hens has bits of black on her otherwise healthily red comb... is this anything to worry about? It isnt crusty or horrible and doesnt seem to bother her...

Hello, they are probably old peck marks from the other hens- birds with big combs can get frost bite in the winter and this causes the comb to go black in places and pieces can drop off.
regards, David :)

thanks david - although they only seem to have appeared recently since she became broody. she is not low in the pecking order and they have appeared during the warmer weather???

Most of my hens have had that sort of thing at some time or other. As Davidd said, its often caused by pecking.

I'd not worry overly. If your hen is well, eating, drinking, pooing and going about her usual routine I'd not think she is unwell.
