Bit of a rant..!

Hello everyone!

Have some new eggs. I have had a bit of bad luck this year already - maybe too early and not fertilised or maybe all the cold weather and travel involved via postie was to blame (all getting a bit expensive!). Therefore no chicks yet at all!
Too late to query this, but have some Vorwerk eggs, and (rather scattily) have realised that I bought large Vorwerk (not bantam) eggs but have other bantam eggs in the incy: all together. Does anyone think this will be a problem? Also, if i do get a full-size hen or two from these Vorwerk, do the two sizes get on okay once grown?
Another thing - yes I know I do go on - what do people thing about P&P on eggs? I have done some research and worked out that sending 6 eggs 1st class costs about £2.50 - £3 (this does include postage AND packaging)but are charged (via ebay anyway) around £5. Now, i don't mind people adding to their profit, given sometimes its just a bit of extra cash and interest for some poultry owners, but would it not be best to increase starting price first and give a REAL P&P? I know £2 doesnt sound a lot of difference but when you buy different eggs from different suppliers it all adds up. Maybe I should move where I can keep a cockerel! Just wondering what you all thought.
LASTLY, (phew), thanks to Lydia, Tim et al for advice previously - hopefully something will become of my mixed bag of Vorwerk, Dutch, Plymouth Rock, Light Sussex, Welsummer and Leghorn eggs!

PS Visited Peebles Poultry Show last weekend - my partner and I were amazed at what incredible creatures there were! Much better to see live rather than in a book. Thanks to Hazel for that.
 
Having large fowl eggs in the incubator wont be a problem.Could be a problem once they've hatched though as bigger chicks will bully/ harrass smaller chicks.If the banties hatch out first,they may be allright in the same brooder for a while,but,I would have another broody ready incase.
As to when the Vorwerk hatch,I'd expect chicks that are raised together to get on,but,I've never kept Vorwerk,Sue (Victoria's poultry) on here does,so try asking her.

As regards postage on ebay,some sellers have charged me £5.00 or £5.99 for recorded delivery or special delivery.When the eggs arrive,the cost is on the box and I was aware of this when placing the bid/buy it now.
Some sellers have charged me these amounts(£5.00/£5.99)and when the eggs have arrived they actually paid R.M. £1.22 or £1.25,likewise,I don't mind a pound or 2 extra for a polybox,but I do think £3.75 or more is a bit steep.
Now,I pay more attention to their amount and method,also,if it is eggs I do really want,pay it,but maybe in the star rating section of feedback,not leave them 5 stars(the highest)for the postage costs.
I think that is fair,as I've given them 5 stars for the other questions.
 
I have big and tiny chicks altogether under broodies , in incubator and in brooder-never seems to have been a problem-until recently when I had a tiny mini silkie bantam and monster hybrid cockerel ( ? 1/2 dinosuar) they were great buddies , unfortunately the big guy got too tall to fit in brooder any more while the little one still needed heat! I think paying more for egg delivery is worth it if they actually come special delivery as there is meant to be a stage in sorting when they are hand sorted then rather than machine sorted - dont know if that actually happens ! Have checked my eggs and all my Vorwerks are fertile, so I shall contact Sue if they (when they) hatch!

i charge £5,00 on ebay for sending eggs as i always send recorded delivery which costs between 2.75 and 3.40 and of course the polyboxes cost me at least a £1.00 each and then there is the bubble wrap and tissue and tape and my time, i don't think thats unreasonable
And with recorded delivery it nearly always gets there next day and im covered with paypal
 
--The other thing is petrol costs , if I were selling eggs it would cost me 10 miles of petrol to the post office--we should remember how much things like that add up! Ros

I charge on ebay £4.50 recorded del (2.90-3.50 post & £1 box) or next day by 1pm £6.50 (5.40 post & £1 box) also have tape, bubble wrap etc.. alot of buyers see the postage amount but forget the box etc has to be paid for aswell

I've just posted some eggs and I think they were £2.49 1st class - I've also just bought some large egg poly boxes and they cost me (with the P&P) £44 for 50 so £1 per box by the time you include the fragile tape and 'Documents' wallet that I use.

People used to increase the postage costs slightly because there was no final valuation fee on this and you could effectively make a few pound without paying ebay their share! This is why they introduced feedback on P&P for sellers I believe...

From those posts I wasn't intending such an offence! Iwas only annoyed that I, just me, paid £5 for a £1.67 stamp and a polybox. Thats a 43% increase. I didnt say anyone on here did it. That wasn't for next day delivery, just 1st class as I said, so maybe people got mixed up. And I understand polyboxes and petrol, which is why I researched it. The number of stars on cost of P&P makes no difference if everyone starts at the same (higher) price....Again, no offence intended..

I honestly don't think you've caused offence.I agree with you,different sellers do offer different services regarding postage.
I was really shocked at being charged a lot more with some sellers,than the actual postage cost.I've also found though,when I took an egg box and asked the postage cost etc.I was told £4.95 for delivery(recorded)to send 6 chinese painted quail eggs.So why in other parts of the country,can people send heavier eggs,in same weight or heavier boxes, for £3 something?
I'm not excessive on packaging,and the poly boxes for chinese painted quail are the smallest and lightest :? .
I think you've bought up a valid point for all of us to consider.Buyers and sellers alike.
 
I had a nasty experience when I said I'd post eggs next day special delivery - at £6.50 (£5.40 postage and £1 polybox) and the auction ended on a Friday - It cost me over £12 :shock: Still sent them though- my fault for not checking it out rather than the buyers!
I send special as the eggs I have had delivered to me that way seem to do better- Personally, I'd be happy for buyer to pay less for postage and send 1st class if they were happy to risk it! The price of posting anything these days is pretty scary though!
Dominique- Whe are your eggs due to hatch? Never hatched Vorwerks but they're very pretty birds :)

I thought i had offended people and Tim was going to throw me off the forum!
In summary, I think some charge too much, for various reasons, and as Tim says, feedback is important. Mostly though, I think it wise to buy off people you know, or the same seller that satisfaction is guaranteed!

I am incubating Vorwerk, which I have never had (as well as others) but I saw them at the Peebels show a couple of weeks ago - beautiful!!!!
Unfortunately, we have to unexpectedly move house, and altho can hopefully take our little darlings from last year, may have to give up the very eggs that I was complaining about the price of postage in the first place! (maybe its karma...)
See my post in selling (hatching eggs for sale), although I have no idea if chicks, pullets or whatever will be available!
