Hello there, I've had garden chicks before but I'm wanting to get a flock of good quality rare breeds for showing and breeding although they will have to be hardy as going to keep them in open secure fields with coops anybody any ideas on breeds best suited and any general info on showing?

Hi Beccle08 and welcome to the forum. I like Marsh Daisies. But problem is getting good stock. The owners club is turning out some very interbred birds which have lost many of the original characteristics. We had a hen from a totally different source -she started life as an ebay egg would you believe! We took her in after a fox strike killed most of the flock. Friendly but assertive she was and very pretty. Good sized comb, white lobes (in her first year only though) with green legs and beak and she laid quite well. So there are good examples out there but finding them might be rather a challenge, but a worthwhile endeavour I think.

I live in doncaster so anywhere within a 40 mile radius - yes I've looked into marsh daises and there's a few in the area its just knowing the best ones!

The best way is to visit one or two of the large poultry shows to see what takes your fancy, literally! :D

There are some good autumns shows around and the 2 best ones are the National Poultry Show in November run by the Poultry Club of GB and the Federation of Poultry Clubs in December. At these two shows you will find around 6,000 - 7,000 birds. Each breed will have a stand with representatives of their club on hand to give information about their breeds and importantly the standard and how to access local breeders/stock. Some breeds are better than others for exhibition and they will be able to advise on the the pros and cons of their own particular breeds.

I breed faverolles and brahmas, lovely birds for showing, can highly recommend them but I am terribly biased! :D :D

There are links on our website with information or most of the breeds and events/exhibition calender.
