Many thanks, Ria :D

Hi, years of experience- some breeds are easier than others- i don't keep orpingtons- never have but it looks like a pullet- smallish comb and "pullet looking" -cock chicks will have bigger combs and be a little redder in the face- pullets tend to get their tails and wings first- i know that's not much help
regards, David :)

Yay, thats exactly what I wanted to hear!! :D :D

What do you think about this one then? 9-10 week old buff orp.

would say the 2nd is defo a cock, but i am pretty sure that orpingtons are difficult to sex for certain at this age, so maybe the first one could go either way, unless u have some others a similar age to compare with?

Second is a boy- first looks like a girl but orps do mature slowly so it could be a late developing boy!

I have found it really hard to be sure with Orps, I could never get it right until they were older than this

I have also found that once you have had a breed for 2 or 3 years, you start to get better at spotting the boys but each breed matures differently and at different times so without comparison in the group...

I would have said both were cockerels  - but without photos of the whole group, it's hard to tell, they could just be a little more mature and actually be pullets...

I would say the black grower in the background of the second photo is definately a pullet :D

But then as I said when I started my post - I find it really hard to tell with Orps!

Do let us know the outcome though.

Thanks for your comments everyone :D

The second one is definately a pullet, still not sure about the first one yet. Nothing has changed with the headgear for a while though so I'm still crossing my fingers its a Bertha and she can stay here. If its a Dave then we have a fantastic home lined up so either way it'll be one happy chicken.

And Tim, you're right about the black grower, she's most definately a girlie, and a very friendly and affectionate one already, by fav my far. :D But dont tell the other girls that!
