Automatic stay logged in function only works for a few days.

The first time I logged into this forum, I checked the "automatically log me in each time" box, and it did so for almost two weeks. Then I had to manually log in again. When I manually logged in a couple of days ago, I again checked that box, but it only automatically logged me in for two days or so, and today I had to manually log in, again.

Why doesn't this function keep me logged in longer?

I have a PC with windows 8.1 on it, and use Mozilla Firefox for my main browser. It's a brand new Acer computer that I bought only a month ago. I still have dial-up, because we can't get high speed internet where I live, and satellite is too expensive.

Could this have something to do with being continually being dropped off of automatic log-in?

Not sure about this one, luvchickens, but I will pass on this post to Tim who is in charge of the software for the forum. I do feel that dialup may be at the root of the problem though. I do occasionally get locked out as well, but not very often and not repeatedly.

Hi Luvchickens,

The forum should keep you logged in by using a Cookie which is saved to your computer.

Firefox has several cookie-related options that give you control over who can and who cannot set cookies. To access Firefox's cookie options, select Tools (or the icon top right under the later versions) -> Options -> Privacy.

From here, it should say Remember History, (or Use Custom Settings gives you the chance to select which sites you store Cookies from).

It would be a good start to clear your cookies for the site to ensure there's nothing wrong with the cookie you have stored if one of these options is already enabled.

You will still need to log back in every now and again because the Cookies only last so long before they expire but it is easier staying logged in as you say.

What specifically do I do when "remember history" comes up, or what do I tell it when the custom settings option comes up? Where do I tell it to store the cookie, or where do I tell it to bring in the cookie from, and what cookie are we even talking about? I'm not that computer-savvy. Need more precise, step-by-step information.

My tech has told me that when my Register Mechanic comes up and cleanses my registry, sometimes that will cause me to be dropped from automatic log-ins, because it's trying to protect me from being in potentially harmful places (registry mechanic doesn't know the difference between an okay log-in and one that isn't, apparently).

The right hand side of the blue strip at the bottom of this page, above the advertisements, has an option for Delete all on board Cookies. You could try starting there and then logging in again, in case the cookie for this forum has been loaded wrongly.
However, as Tim says, cookies do expire and occasionally I have to log in again, although not as often as you are talking about. It happens for me if I actually switch off my iPad and then switch on again. Usually I just leave it on standby but switching off and on seems to clear cookies from other sites I use in permanent login.

This page has the Firefox options explained for 'remember history' (part way down under History):

Basically, by allowing the browser to remember history, it will store the pages you've visited, remember forms you've filled in (e.g. your log in on this site) and store cookies.

If you don't allow it to remember history, it won't store the cookie.

A cookie is basically a small encrypted file that the forum sends to your computer with your log-in validation. There is lots of talk about cookies and privacy because they are also used for advertising and tracking - so if for example you browse a site about buying a new camera and it is using an advertising platform such as Google Adsense, then you go to another site and magically that site is displaying adverts for cameras - that is done by saving a cookie on your computer.

There are two sides to the story - some say they don't want to be 'tracked' like this and targeted for specific adverts but the other side to the argument, others say they would prefer to see adverts for more relevant products that interest them.

Personally, I allow all websites to remember my history and have never had any issues. I don't visit any odd websites.

The other option I believe would be to do it 'site by site' allowing only the sites you choose.

The other tool you mention, I'm not familiar with but if it's 'cleaning' it probably deletes your cookies and history etc.

If you're ever concerned about a site or some history that is showing, you can clear it from Firefox by deleting the last hour, day or even all of it - perhaps you would want to do this if you've just bought a present for someone who also uses the computer and you didn't want them to stumble across the site you'd just visited. Clearing the last 'hour' of history becomes very useful then.

As to the problem I've described about being dropped from automatic log-ins, your instructions still haven't told me specifically what I need to do with either the "remember history" or the custom option you mentioned to address precisely that problem. What do I need to specify in the custom option, or what do I need to do in the history option, that will specifically resolve the problem of being dropped? Once these options come up, I still have no idea how to specifically proceed from there. Where do I store this cookie that is affecting my particular situation? Do I delete it? Do I specify a place to put it, and if so, where? Do I tell the computer where to store it, and how do I communicate that instruction to the computer? Where would I even find this cookie?

I understand you to be saying that there is one cookie that is supposed to be stored in one place and may be stored in the wrong place. I need to know where I should tell the computer to store that cookie, HOW to tell it to store it there, and where to find out the wrong place it might be and tell the computer to remove it from there and store it in the right place. Once either of these options appear, Is there a box I need to check or uncheck? Is there a tab or a button I need to click on to achieve what I need to achieve? Evidently, I'm not being understood.

Never mind, though. Apparently we aren't on the same page where answering my question is concerned, so I'll just go ahead and manually log in when I need to. It's not that much trouble.

Specific instructions: Set your Browser to "Remember History" - How to do that for your browser - see the link I posted.

Cookies are stored by your browser. There is no file to save or do anything with, all you need to do is select "Remember History" and the rest is taken care of...

It should, yes - if it doesn't, it could be the Registry program you're running is cleaning up and deleting the Cookies or you have something else set in your browser such as "delete cookies on exit"

Lets see if this works though...
