I think it depends on the type of bird being slaughtered, personally, anything bigger than a chicken needs to be the broomstick method, as ducks, geese and turkeys have very strong tough necks to try and break with your hands. Alot of people use an axe, it may be messy, but it's very quick, but some small breeds are easily done by dislocation method, and a broomstick may be suggested as 'over-kill'. Chicks can be done on a sharp edge. Like a worktop or corner frame.
We personally use a mix of the broomstick for larger birds, and the axe for normal chickens, but hand dislocation for chicks. I suppose it's whatever you feel happy and confident using. Making sure it's swift, and doesn't cause lingering pain.
My Dad used a killing cone once, a very old fashioned method of dispatch, but he went back to the broomstick method as he felt more confident using it.
