Arnold has a bad leg

Glad to hear Gordon has arrived safely! Would love to see some pics when you have time.

Unfortunately I don't think we have pics of Arnold but I will look -isn't that always the case. Will take one of Frankie (and Basil and Boris) while I'm there and then Gordon. Frankie was a bit smaller than big softy Arnold, but both Frankie and Gordon are in the same 'rearing' coops, so you will get an idea of size difference from the coop in the background. Arnold was over 5Kg (perhaps 12 lbs), Gordon is under 4Kg (perhaps 8 lbs) which is the same weight as some of the hens. Still the hens will appreciate the weight difference! Not the biggest Wyandotte though. Our friends silver laced cock Victor (killed by a fox) weighed in at 15lbs and stood 3" taller than Arnold and I bet there are bigger.

Bother, my post crossed with Chris's and seems to have disappeared. Here goes again:

Glad you all got back safely Chris, we Welsh people can be dangerous to outsiders you know! You don't have to be English married to a Welshman to be an outsider still after 20 years. We were still outsiders after 27 years in an English county and OH is as English as they come. That was nothing compared to our neighbours who had moved from the west to the est of the county after the war and were still outsiders in the 1990s - and no, it wasn't Yorkshire!

Nowt so strange as folk eh Margaid. Yes we deadlocked the doors until we crossed the border! Actually I stopped in the nearest village to ask directions and people I spoke to DID know the lady I was trying to find but just said they didn't and sent me on to someone else. Postman to Postmistress to butcher to another butcher -who was extremely helpful I will add.

Not too sure about the name Gordon now -he seems like a Colin to me. So at the moment he is officially unnamed. Tomorrow he gets his razor sharp spurs trimmed, a good check over and dust. Then he meets his girls. We've had problems with both the other new cockerels. Both stressed and then ill in their new environment. But they were youngsters and Unnamed is now two and seems very settled. In fact the only cause of stress is that he can't get through the wire to the hens alongside!

Merlin, as he is now named because he is like a small Gandalf, got very excited when he went in with his girls. "He's very fertile" we were told. Big mistake as these girls won't have anything to do with him. He's too small to intimidate them and is now rather depressed. In fact he's behaving more like a hen! Not making any attempt to tread them. The mistake we made was not introducing him properly in our rush to get him established. We should have moved the hens out of their coop for a few days and put him in. Then introduced then one at a time -the same way we did with young Boris. Fingers crossed he finds some confidence soon -or a little magic!!
