The ongoing saga of my cockerel continues.......

I've tracked down the farm where he may have come from as a fertilised egg. It turns out that he might possibly be a Black Araucana & not an Asian as I (with the help of nnbreeder!) thought, although the guy said he was a bit doubtful they were pure breed & thought the colours were possibly mixed & they were sold as such. I've tried to find out about them & so far not much luck, & most photo's are of the Lavender variety. If I knew the colour of egg he was hatched from it would be easy as they lay blue eggs!

Anyone keep this breed & can give me any info or a picture would be really helpful.

Thanks.

I had a cross with a copper black Maran. Vicious beast of a thing. He was eaten for Christmas dinner.Stunning looking bird though, hence me wanting to keep him to go with my ex batts.

Lemme see if I can find a pic of him to post.

I don't seem to be able to find any atm. I looked at your pics of your bird and they look similar to my chook. Only real difference is colouring and also tail feathering. And mine didn't look quite so upright that I remember, but then he used to when cock a do da doodling. He wasn't a meaty bird by any means but certainly big, rangy and also aggressive as hell. Never met quite such a mean chook once he matured.

I'd say he is a cross breed but with what I'd not like to say.

Here the Araucanas are a rumpless birds. The Ameracaunas have tails. Here is some info and pics on the breed. http://www.feathersite.com/Poultry/CGA/Arau/BRKAraucanas.html And if I was wrong it isn't the first time and surely won't be the last. LOL

There is a pic of one bird on the page with a hairdo like yours, it may not be from the pecking damage.

From what I have been told by breeders of the Ameracaunas here being vicious is kind of a breed trait but they are trying to breed that out of them.

Here is the link to the British Araucana site - there is a picture gallery on it which may help you http://www.araucana.org.uk/ the lavender colour is the most popular colour kept I believe but there are blacks and black red.

Thanks for the replies everyone.
I have looked on the Araucana site Ally-J, I hadn't found that one. The pics are very helpful & if he is one, he certainly looks a bit like the Black/Red. Reading the info about them it says they are soft feathered but my Scruffy definately doesn't have soft feathers! But as I've had no previous experience in handling either an Asian or an Araucana I don't know the difference except he's not like any of my other chooks!
Snifter - he's a rangy looking chap just like you say but he's not aggressive.

Maybe he's a cross?
