Found a tiny green egg in with the others this afternoon so it was quite a thrill. I have two Aracaunas so don't know which one it was.
I thought they would have started laying a couple of weeks ago because their combs have been very red for ages and they squat down when I catch them.
We are supposed to be having spring here but it is still quite wintery. I kept the chicks in our basement from when they first hatched with their foster mother because it was such a cold winter - apparently the coldest in our district for 50 odd years. I made up a large run with boxes and netting and heaps of sand and it worked for a while - until the sand dried out and covered the whole basement! My poor other half spent ages cleaning everything up after they were big enough to put back in the run with the others, but it was all worth it I reckon. I can relate to Lydia - she has chooks in her lounge sometimes, mine lived in our basement.
