it has just started to snow here down by heathrow airport and yep theres already talk of cancelling flights only had a feww flakes so far though , but this is where i now worry about the animals out there that have no protection agaisnt the weather like the horses on my local common land which are owned by a freind who doesnt care for them like he should in the winter .

Hi Karminski. We're at about an inch so far, but it's drifting so some area are much thicker. Already closed some Staffordshire and Derbyshire high roads. Good for the hens though as the snow adds extra insulation to the roof. Trouble is too much building up on the runs and they will collapse, So I will be out about 9.00pm to clear them all.

we have about 1/2 inch :( to much for me well i do like snow if i am in doors only but once i am out and doing the animals i hate it makes everything so much harder to deal with but if to much gets caught on the roof of the run then i will be fully protectedto bang it of the netting as the last time it snowed i decided to knock it of and it all came though the holes ontop of me i only had my jacket on i walked out the run looking like a snowman    and i froze took ages for my hands to work again .

Now got 3-4" Karminski. Just been out to sweep all the covered runs before they collapsed plus the shelters and the greenhouse. Hope the shed roof and the particularly the carport hold out as they are a bit rickety anyway. Forcast to turn to sleet soon and the temperature to rise to a very slow thaw. This is the thickest and wettest (so very heavy) snow we have had here in 12 years. Road out now impassable until it thaws; they never clear it.

yiks sounds bad , didnt you get affected by last years snow then ?? hope my new house roof holds out oh well find out in the morning as i aint going out there now .

was out at 5,40 am this morning knocking the snow of the netting got covered again and froze well my hands did  it was so bright i didnt really need to use my head touch , have 1 beam to replace across the roof as the weight had snapped it and a bit of netting to staple back on in the bantams side of the run where i knocked it a bit to hard but apart from that everything was fine , we have had about 3-4 inches overnight and that was enough to drop the netting down by about 2 foot looked wierd going in the run with it that low also its great to see where the foxes had walked during the night and they had got pretty close to the run as well .

No foxes here last night Karminski, but we had another inch after I cleared the run covers so 4-5" here with drifts to 9" in places. Far worse than the 2" we had last year. Opened all the runs but only Frankie has come out so far. Greenhouse said -4 degrees, which is right for the forecast town temperature of -1 degree as we are always 3 degrees lower. Will have to dig some paths through the open runs now so they can get to their food and water under the shelters. Boris is his usual enthusiastic self in the greenhouse but Claude has never been outside before, let alone seen snow -agoraphobic TNN cockerel?

i have just done the netting but that will have to be replaced with the stronger stuff as soon as the weather breaks as one of the bantams has already worked out how to get though the littleest gaps along the edges were its getting weaker an just simply breaking and the beam i will sort out later as its only a support beam for the netting anyways .most of my girls are staying under the shelters abd the little banties are hiding under thier house .

We had a little yesterday...this morning all gone and it feels a lot warmer here too, no need to break any ice this morning! :D

i must admit it is warmer i havent had to put 2 layers of clothing on which is a nice feeling felt like the incrediable hulk for the past few weeks with all the layers on

We've had a fair bit of snow here - usually takes me about an hour to get around all the birds - three hours this morning! Have had to dig paths to all the sheds etc. just so I could get to them!

Birds are all fine, but there has been a loft of drift. I put up windbreak netting on the open fronted pens last night. It's reduced the amount of snow that is in the pens, but I still had to dig it out so that the birds could get to their food and water. Most of the birds don't want to either come out of their house, or off their perches (in the outside pens) so have cleared some ground for them and left them too it.

The Shetland fowl - now they;'ve been out and playing in the snow - it doesn't faze them one bit! Tough birds those that come from the Shetland Isles! :D

Despite all snow it is relatively warm +5C but my birds refused to go in to the garden as the snow freks them out.I had put them all under trampoline where ground was clean from snow and enjoyed the grass and latter ther run like mad to their run. They seemed to look at it and thinkinking what the heck and where this come from ?! :o they run is covered so I only pushed the snow out of the roof to make things lighter for them:)

Mine have been going crazy. Snow melting and sliding down the roof sets them off. Just as they have calmed down another bit falls off the trees, then the roof and so on.

i still got an hour to go before mine to go bed so i was going to go out dig over some of the run while the ground has gone soft but wander wether to just leave it for now , some of my girls are looking really down not sure if its the weather and the moult am starting to worry now .
i was going to drop in the number of birds i have in time as i have to admit that i do stuggle a bit in the winter and have just my litlte bantams but now i have another customer whos more then willing to have fresh eggs thing is i like it when people demand fresh eggs so i feel like i am kinda stuck .

Supplying fresh eggs is great Karminski, but you need to be sure you are making a real profit. Not just feed costs but bedding, vet, grit, ACV, wormer, treats, cost of the hens and anything else you can think of. We put the egg money in a tin and its always empty, so we have to dip into our pockets. But people round here won't pay more than £1.30 for half a dozen medium eggs, no matter how tasty they are. I think they cost us £1.90 to produce, excluding coops, runs, feeders and drinkers!

i charge either £1.20 or £1 to the eldery , but laterly i have been getting moaned at for not putting my prices up :o i dont really do it for the money anyway i just like the idea of giving out fresh food i even have a 4 day back log and that dont include my family  .
as i already buy the food when i get the horse stuff the money just goes into my pocket i could never use a tin it would never last ,lmao .
