one of my white leghorn hens seems poorly yet she is not coughing wheezing sneezing or anything , she doesnt seem egg bound but shes down and miserable and i cant seem to find anything wrong with her apart from it looks like shes starting her moult , she is eating but only a little i mixed her pellets with warm water this morning an she seemed happy with that so she is drinking an eating something :-)05 do you reckon it could be the moult knocking her for six .
she has moved on her own but most the time shes standing with her tail down an all puffed right up then she seems to pick up a bit :-)19

hi Karlooben,I've no idea what is making your leghorn feel unwell, but she certainly sounds unhappy.Moulting can knock them for 6,a very pretty pekin hen of mine was knocked for 6,moulted very heavily and unfortunately never got back to her usual self.
Try and keep her warm, maybe bring her inside your house.Mix her warm food that is softened, layers pellets or mash with warm water is excellent.Mine also enjoy weet-a-bix with warm water,I add a dollop of bio yogurt as well.If she doesn't pick up soon(24-48hrs) I would suggest a trip to your vet,she may need a short course of an antibiotic like baytril.

i would love to bring her into the house but i cant its called a big dog named jack { well known on another site   } he would just eat her and wreck the house at the same time . all mine are having warm watered pellets as well as my poorly one she has very slight runny poos but they are normal colour if shes going into a moult which could very well be the case judging by her baldness starting on her head then i dont think shes ill as in an infection or anything when i go an clean them out in a few hours she will get lots more extra bedding then she already has just in case she does have anything though i have shut her away in the quantine section of the run , will look to see if i have any more baytril if not then i'll go get some anyway .
would of thought it would be my new ex batts that would be going down hill but they are as strong as anything at the mo never thought i would see one of my leghorns go down and miserable though .

have just let them out but i checked in the main house with the tourch and she was resting with the others on top perch so i hope shes feeling better .

today she was out an almost back to herself with the other girls , now i have leant that you dont always have to think the worse when one looks down in the dumps she is definitly going though her moult .

shes still ok although her comb has gone pale poor girl got hit hard with the moult starting am just so glad it was anything seroius.

Put ACV in her water & give her extra protein to help the feathers grow back quicker - ie codliver oil in her pellets, cat food, peas (not ones in sugar or salt), chick crumb without ACS. These are just a few things I use for extra protein - got a serama in full moult at the mo :o

thanks for those tips :D i have them on the poultry spice with thier pellets at the mo and that seems to be helping
