Hi All
I have had enough of snow now as have the chooks. So to take my mind off the cold weather I am now thinking about my first hatch. I have only kept chooks for a couple of years and this year am thinking of trying something new to go with my pekins. would need to be pekin size or smaller, friendly and laid back. I like the look of serama ( does anyone keep these? what are they like?) are there any small breeds that lay well? anyone have any ideas on a breed to go with my pekins??

Go for sabelpoots

Feathered feet like pekins, great layers and very friendly (some say cheeky) :D :D :D

Sablepoots do go well with pekins, and are definitely more inquisitive/friendlier.
Serama's look very nice, but, they come in 3 different sizes, which are all bantam. The sizes are classed as A,B, or C.You can get any of these 3 sizes from any serama, regardless of which size class it is in,also any colour as they don't breed true to colour.
They are reputed to be very frindly and make lovely pets, due to their size they need an enclosed run.
Look up www.sunnysideserama.com for more information.

Personally,I'd just go to Sue's and get some well bred, already tame sablepoots.

bantam wyandottes are very laid back and about the same size as pekins, ours were happy living together

thanks for the ideas , had not thought about sabelpoots so will see what info I can find about them. I have also been looking at the photo's on here and came across bobble the poland very very cute and am now thinking I would like some polish frizzle's does anyone know how they would take to pekins if they are hardy or prone to anything?

Bantam polands get on very well with pekins, and Sue(Victoria's Poulltry)on here also breeds polands. Why don't you go and have a look at her website,it's victoriaspoultry.co.uk she will be able to give you any information you want on polish or sablepoots.Sablepoots are also called booted bantams, there is information on them here www.bootedbantams.co.uk hope these help.

Bobble lives happily with pekins, orpingtons and some cream legbars- and they all get along fine!- She free ranges with the others and has given me no trouble at all- apart from getting a bit lost sometimes! although I have been told to check her crest regularly for mites.
I now have some poland friends for her as i'm hoping to breed some chamois polands in the spring- Can't wait! :D

I keep Poland bantams with Pekins and they get on fine. Just tend to get lost if free ranging from time to time, so need to be in safe area to range.

I also kept Dutch banties and loved them. Very pretty birds and the smallest bantam. Very friendly and easy going although they can fly well. Lay well also. I kept red pyle and would have liked more but had to part with them last year.
