Another poorly chuck....

Hi,

After losing Daisy a few weeks back (mareks seems to be the favourite diagnosis), we now have a poorly looking Speckledy (about 2 yrs old)!

Fortunately, totally different symptons. (Bit of a worry though, as 3 new girls arrived yesterday - fully seperated at the minute though).

She is walking very slow and upright (reminds me of a Penguin) and seems to be swollen or fuffed up. She is still drinking and will take some small amounts of food. Eyes are clear and bright, comb is good and red and her face looks normal. Her breathing really moves her body - but I can't hear any weezing and she doesn't smell.

She is staying out of the way and struggles to walk. Likes to keep herself in the egg box if she can. Plus her poo is green, in a white milky fluid. She is quite willing to have a "talk" with you when with her and she will let you pick her up - the latter is not something she usually over keen on.

Wormed about 7 - 10 days ago with verm-x. Sprayed with anti -peck spray last week twice as she seemed to be being pecked by our other old girl - no feathers around her vent, running down between her legs and a bald patch on her chest.

Any suggestions would be great.

Hi It does sound like an egg laying problem, either egg bound ,or by your description possibly egg peritonitis, where the contents of egg slip into the abdominal cavity causing oedema.
Does her tummy feel hard and tight? Is her walking normal or laboured and a bit penguin like? Pronounced/laboured breathing is often linked to EYP as the pressure from the fluid can build against the air sacs.
Check if she feels hot, either place a hand on her tummy or under wings, if she is hot she might have complicated EYP.

There are various treatments available however a vet would be the best option to advise.

Thanks forthat - EYP was my thought having been looking around at symptons. She walks more like a Penguine than a chicken and she does feel full and warm and her breathing looks like hard work.

Are there any over the counter medicines / remedies that I can try?

Also, if she does recover is it likely that she will still produce eggs or will she just be our pet?

Has anyone out there had a successful recovery from this?

have you done her for mites as well. up her protin give her some meal worm or a iny bit wet cat food.
i dont know if right but i give mine a drop of honey in warm water as honey has healing suff in it (works great on mucky wounds too)
have you tried a warm bath if do make sure she warm while she drys
