My Girls have arrived!!

2 very lanky 17 wk old brown hens (not sure what they are) Billy and Jean ... After dad and Mum in Law! now thats how to make a good impression 4 weks after getting married to their son lol..

And 2 buff Orps...Clarissa and Jennifer (two fat ladies) looking a little patchy.. I'm told they are malting (do chickens malt?)

They have made themselves very comfy the 2 kids on the perch and the 2 oldies in and next 2 a nest box. My perch is only 3 inch off the floor so I'm assuming the oldies just prefer the floor.

How long should i have them shut in the house and run before they can come in the garden and know where bed is.

I know others do it differently but personally I would let them out after a night in the coop if they are safe and can't wander off - but you must be around to pop them back in at dusk until they know the way in. I always think it's valuable scratching time!

If you have a small run they can use, that would be perfect.

My coop has a run built in, Think i'll let them out tomorrow afternoon for a run round before bed.

thanks for all your help

I suppose it's a bit late to take them back and complain they were mislabelled!

LOL  ,depends how long your supplier gives you.......but if you can return them after 7 1/2 yrs let us know ;) .

Hi Tori,

yes they do moult, and, everyone's chooks seem to be moulting now.
as your coop has a built in run,how about leaving their pop hole thing open,so they can venture in and out to explore as they choose. They will most likey go to bed,if not you can help them.
Orpingtons are a large breed, that I haven't had the pleasure of owning, but, they might not perch at all.If they do,it doesn't sound as if your perches will be too high to cause them a problem.Apparently, high perches can sometimes be a problem for them.
If I was your mum in law,I'd be honored to have a chook named after me,and, especially a cuddly Orpington.
